Spring has returned to beautiful New York City, and that means that it is time for Frieze New York, NADA New York, and its surrounding fairs. Today NADA detailed some of the special projects and programming it will host alongside the 100 exhibitors who will offer work at Basketball City on Manhattan’s Pier 36 from May 14 through 17.
Among the Special Projects:
— Artist Hayley A. Silverman, whose superb recent show at Bodega some New Yorkers may recall, will have a dog “trail the aisles of the fair wearing a speaker that plays a medley of song introductions from cartoons and musicals sung in the mother tongue of naturalized immigrants, foreign visa holders, and expatriates currently living in New York,” according to press materials. (Bodega is presenting it.)
— Reprising a project they did at New York gallery Essex Flowers earlier this year with Melissa Brown, shipping container and think tank Where will host an offsite poker tournament, with the winner taking home an art collection. (There’s more to it than that, but let’s not give away the whole thing here.)
— Print All Over Me is collaborating with NADA on a line of artist-designed merchandise by the likes of Amy Yao, Bjorn Copeland, Daniel Heidkamp, and Sarah Braman. Hot lineup!
For the first time, NADA is also organizing a NADA Presents program, which includes public events—conversations, performances, and the like. Among them is a talk at 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 16, called “Whither the Art Gallery? (What Are Galleries Good for These Days?),” which sounds rather intriguing. It’s being presented by Artspace.
For complete details, head to NADA’s website before attending the fair.
My own personal special project after attending NADA New York will entail walking a few blocks over to Mission Chinese and stuffing myself with a wide variety of their offerings.
