Pace Gallery announced today that it now represents Leo Villareal, the New York–based artist known for his large-scale LED light sculptures. To mark the news, Pace will be displaying some of Villareal’s recent work in London’s Regent’s Park during Frieze later this week.
In 2013, the artist strung 25,000 white lights across two miles of the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge for a piece titled, The Bay Lights. Typical of Villareal’s work, The Bay Lights demonstrated the artist’s interest in creating abstract works of art out of natural settings.
In addition to showing work at the gallery, Villareal will also be involved with Future/Pace, a public arts partnership between the gallery and Futurecity. Villareal’s first project with this group is a public arts proposal for the Illuminated River design competition, which, if successful, would one day see Villareal’s LEDs adorning 17 bridges along the river Thames in London.
