Pace Gallery is opening a new outpost in Seoul next week, with an inaugural exhibition at a new space in the city’s Yongsan district featuring “ten internationally-acclaimed artists” scheduled for March 4 through April 29, according to a post on the gallery’s website. With the addition of the Korean gallery, Pace will have eleven spaces around the world, in addition to its transnational FuturePace initiative.
Pace has spaces in Beijing and Hong Kong. The similarly large Gagosian Gallery empire has an outlet in Hong Kong and David Zwirner has plans to follow soon, but no comparable enterprise has a space in South Korea yet. Seoul has, however, been home to a small but lively gallery scene for a while—Gallery Hyundai, Leeahn Gallery, and others are currently based there.
Pace’s new Seoul digs will put the gallery in the same neighborhood as the D Museum and the Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art. Contacted by ARTnews, the gallery was not immediately available for comment, however further details about the Seoul operation are expected to be announced tomorrow, at a celebration of the groundbreaking for Pace’s forthcoming new West 25th Street flagship space in New York.
