Pace Gallery has slated the opening of its new flagship building in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan for September 2019. The eight-story, 75,000-square-foot building will be located at 540 West 25th Street. Designed by Bonetti/Kozerski Architecture in collaboration with Pace’s president and CEO, Marc Glimcher, it was developed through Weinberg Properties.
“Designing this new building alongside Bonetti / Kozerski and Weinberg Properties has given our team at Pace the opportunity to approach, with fresh eyes, the question of what it means to be an art gallery in the 21st century,” Glimcher said in a news release. The new space more than doubles Pace’s exhibition space in New York. Its largest gallery is on the ground floor, which spans 3,800 square feet and holds a gallery research library that will be open to the public by appointment.
There are no columns in the floor plan, in an effort, a release said, to keep the space as open as possible. And speaking of open space, the sixth floor will have a 6,000-square-foot, 14-foot-high outdoor area to accommodate sculptural installations.
The architects said in a statement, “We were challenged to re-evaluate the gallery paradigm, both in terms of building and gallery design, whilst being supported to make in-depth studies into materiality, natural and artificial light, as well as building construction technologies.”
