Perrotin gallery, which has spaces in Paris, New York, Hong Kong, Seoul, and Tokyo, will open an outpost in Shanghai in September. Located in the city’s Bund quarter, the Shanghai gallery will be Perrotin’s tenth space currently in operation, counting bookstores and offices.
Perrotin’s second outpost in China will be 12,900 square feet. According to the gallery, the Shanghai space is intended to further its reach in Asia, where Perrotin already has three spaces.
The news comes amid a series of major galleries announcing that they will begin operations in Shanghai. In September, Lévy Gorvy announced that it would open an office in Shanghai, with former Christie’s specialist Danqing Li at the helm. A little more than two weeks later, Hauser & Wirth revealed that it, too, would be opening an office in Shanghai, as well as another in Beijing and a gallery in Hong Kong. (David Zwirner gallery inaugurated a Hong Kong space earlier this year.)
Shanghai’s art scene has become home to many major private museums in the past few years, including Qiao Zhibing’s Qiao Space, Liu Yiqian and Wang Wei’s Long Museum, and Budi Tek’s Yuz Museum. Earlier this month, it was revealed that the Los Angeles County Museum of Art is in talks to collaborate with the Yuz on future ventures.
