Phillips announced in a press release that Jean-Paul Engelen, who was previously the worldwide co-head of 20th century and contemporary art at the auction house, will be promoted to deputy chairman, Americas. Since 2015, Engelen had overseen the contemporary department with his former co-head, Robert Manley, and going forward the two will continue to run the department together, despite Engelen’s new role.
“Jean-Paul has built an extraordinary team in his two years with Phillips and played a leading role in establishing a world-class 20th century and contemporary art department,” said Cheyenne Westphal, Phillips global chairman. “As a deputy chairman, Jean-Paul will be a key member of our global leadership team and will work to build our international 20th century and contemporary strategy. He will also continue to develop long term relationships with our top clients so we can continue to grow and expand our client base in this critical segment.”
Engelen joined Phillips in 2015, after a stint working for Qatar Museums, where he was the director of public art. Prior to that, he spent 16 years at Christie’s, leaving as the senior specialist & director of postwar and contemporary art.
