The 2015 edition of Art Basel Miami Beach, the last major art fair of the calendar year, opens on Thursday, December 3, with previews beginning Wednesday, December 2. Comprised of nine different sections, the fair will include 267 international galleries from 32 countries.
While the Galleries section (see our preview) often features several works from various artists on the gallery’s roster, the other sections tend toward curated micro-exhibitions: Survey is dedicated to historical works; Nova is for younger galleries to show work by one to three artists created in the last three years; Positions presents a major project by one artist; Kabinett allows galleries to curate an installation-style exhibition by a single artist; Edition is for editioned works and prints; and Film, curated by David Gryn, presents film and video works indoors and outdoors. (The other two sections are Public, for large-scale public works around Miami and Miami Beach, and Conversations and Salons, the fair’s programming of panels, talks, and lectures.)
Among the highlights from these sections are Dr. Larka at Mexico City’s kurimanzutto in Kabinett, Keith Sonnier at New York’s Castelli Gallery in Survey, and Nikki S. Lee at Seoul’s ONE AND J. Gallery in Film.
