At its October 16 contemporary evening sale, coinciding with the Frieze art fair, Christie’s London will auction Peter Doig’s Cabin Essence, which the artist completed in 1994. The painting, according to Christie’s, is the largest work in Doig’s “Concrete Cabins” series, which Doig worked on from 1991 to 1998. Cabin Essence, which belongs to a “private American collector,” is a depiction of Le Corbusier’s Unité d’Habitation. “A significant portion of the proceeds of the sale” will benefit the World Justice Project, Christie’s said. A Christie’s spokesperson said in an email that the work “is expected to reach above £9 million” (about $13.8 million).
Another work in the “Concrete Cabin” series sold at Christie’s London in 2010 for $3.21 million. An auction record was set for Doig earlier this year at the May contemporary evening sale at Christie’s in New York, when his painting Swamped, from 1990, sold for $25.9 million. (That painting’s estimate was not printed in an auction catalogue either, and was only available by request, though according to the Globe and Mail, citing a Christie’s employee, reported that it was “about $20 million.”)
Cabin Essence will be on view at Christie’s New York headquarters from September 26 to 29 before traveling to London.
