A few days ago the video for the Foundation for Art and Preservation in Embassies’ impressively stacked Andy Warhol panel—moderated by Bob Colacello Peter Brant, Donna De Salvo, Larry Gagosian, Jane Holzer, Alberto Mugrabi, and Aby Rosen—went online and it’s well worth a look for anyone interested in the artist or his market.
It’s the sort of panel in fact where Colacello can throw out the detail that Warhol’s Eight Elvises (1963) sold for $100 million, “I think, to someone from the Qatari royal family in 2008.” (That private deal was brokered by Philippe Ségalot, who is believed to have been negotiating art sales for Qatar at that time, and Colacello’s reference to it appears around 28:20, dropped in the context of Warhol’s being one of the few artists ever to have work sell for over $100 million.)
That detail, as far as we can recall, had never been reported. Even if Colacello is just referencing rumors, the whole video is well worth a watch. You’ll find it below.
