Art Basel has named independent Swiss curator Samuel Leuenberger as the curator of its Parcours section, which is devoted to site-specific works that engage with the city of Basel. Florence Derieux had previously held Leuenberger’s position for the past three years. The first Leuenberger-curated edition of Parcours will be in 2016.
Leuenberger is best known for running SALTS, a nonprofit space in Birsfelden, Switzerland, that shows work by emerging Swiss and international artists. He is also currently a curator for the Department of Culture of Basel-Stadt.
“Growing up in Basel and working internationally, I am looking forward to activate the historical center of the city as a place where contemporary art is encountered by a broader public,” Leuenberger said in a statement. “Presenting large-scale interventions and simple gestures, it is a most thrilling challenge for artists working today to interact with the city’s historical richness, its stories and architectures.”
