New York’s Sean Kelly Gallery announced today that it now represents Julian Charrière, a Berlin–based Swiss artist whose multidisciplinary practice looks at our current geological epoch, the Anthropocene.
Charrière, a former student of Olafur Eliasson, has gained attention for his research-based practice that sees him traverse the globe to gather the material that informs his work. For instance, “Freeze, Memory,” Charrière’s first outing at Sean Kelly last year, featured double-exposed photographs of a former Soviet Union nuclear testing site in Kazakhstan speckled with fragments of fallout. The show also included several iridescent rocks Charrière formed out of melted-down technological devices. The rocks also turned up at the Armory Show.
In a phone conversation with ARTnews, Janine Cirincione, a director at Sean Kelly, described Charrière’s work as “a beautiful intersection of philosophy, science, and the way time acts to create transformation.”
At Frieze New York in May, Sean Kelly’s booth will feature Charrière’s work, and several of his salt sculptures will be exhibited in the Arsenale at the Venice Biennale later that month.
