The Zachęta National Gallery of Art announced this week that Sharon Lockhart will represent Poland at the 2017 Venice Biennale. Her project will be overseen by Barbara Piwowarska, an independent curator based in Warsaw.
Lockhart’s project already has a title: Little Review, in reference to a Polish publication for children produced by the newspaper Nasz Przeglad. The Los Angeles–based artist will create a photography series that deals with the history of Little Review, as well as a film that will include interviews with young women at sociotherapy centers in Poland.
In a release, the jury noted that the Polish artist Piotr Uklański was the runner-up. Were he to have been chosen to show at the Venice Biennale, his project would have featured 68 photographs, each focusing on a different aspect of Poland’s history.
