Xavier Hufkens gallery in Brussels now represents Sherrie Levine, the Pictures Generation artist whose essential photographs, sculptures, and installations meditate on the nature of authorship in a world of images. She will now join a roster that includes David Altmejd, Robert Mapplethorpe, Josh Smith, Danh Vo, and Cathy Wilkes.
Levine was one of five artists included Douglas Crimp’s 1977 “Pictures” show at Artists Space. That exhibition launched an entire group of artists who began to rely heavily on appropriated pictures, in an effort to question whether originality mattered in a time of mass image production. Since then, Levine’s work has taken the form of monochromes whose colors are derived from paintings by Renoir and photographs of reproductions of photographs by Walker Evans.
Over the past few years, following a 2011 Whitney Museum retrospective, Levine’s market has grown significantly. In 2015, Levine left New York’s Paula Cooper Gallery, which had represented her for 17 years, and joined the roster of David Zwirner gallery.
