Even as longtime art dealers are closing up shop in New York, London, and elsewhere, some of the industry’s most moneyed galleries are expanding. Zurich powerhouse Galerie Eva Presenhuber announced that it will open a space in New York in May, an expansion that has long been rumored. It will be located in NoHo, at 39 Great Jones Street, an address that has been home to Karma and the studio of Ugo Rondinone over the years. (It’s also home to a charming window gallery, titled 39 Great Jones Street, that shows work by one artist at a time—a piece by Tamara Gonzalez is on view at the moment.) The first show at the new space will be by Tobias Pils, opening May 5, during Frieze New York.
Presenhuber, who went into business in 2003 and who operates two galleries in Switzerland’s most populous city, has a formidable blue-chip artist roster that includes Joe Bradley, the estate of Jay DeFeo, Trisha Donnelly, Carroll Dunham, Rondinone, John Giorno (Rondinone’s longtime partner, as it happens), Henry Taylor, and Michael Williams. Since many of the artists who show with her already have heavyweight representation in New York, it will be intriguing to see which artists do exhibitions on Great Jones Street. An email about the move said that the New York branch “will function as an important extension of the Zurich gallery.”
Handling design duties on the new location is everyone’s favorite gallery designer, Selldorf Architects, which has done work for Gladstone, David Zwirner, and Hauser & Wirth, as well as the Clark Institute and the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego.
