Opening: John Baldessari, “Movie Scripts/ Art” at Marian Goodman Gallery
John Baldessari’s new work takes details from famous images in art history, edits them down into nonrecognition, then pairs them with text from movie scripts. “In this way,” Baldessari says, “the details of old dead guys’ paintings (from the collection of the Städel Museum in Frankfurt, where this work will be exhibited in relation to the historical paintings) become illustrations of the movie scripts. I found this mélange of high art and Hollywood amusing.”

Talk: Mika Rottenberg at NYU

Opening: “Ursula von Rydingsvard: Permeated Shield” at Galerie Lelong
You know her, you love her, she is a legend. For her latest show at Lelong, von Rydingsvard will present new cedar sculptures, as well as bronze works and works on paper that she made with the masters at New York’s Dieu Donné.

Opening: “Marina Abramović: Generator” at Sean Kelly Gallery
Marina Abramović’s new show is about “nothingness,” and will require visitors to surrender their cellphones, laptops, iPads, watches, bags, etc. before entering the gallery. They will in turn be given blindfolds and noise canceling headphones to create an atmosphere of “full emptiness.”

Opening: “Disturbing Innocence,” curated by Eric Fischl, at the Flag Art Foundation
Eric Fischl curates a group show featuring over 50 artists who use “dolls, toys, mannequins, robots, and other surrogates” in their work. Artists include Will Cotton, George Condo, Henry Darger, Carroll Dunham, Robert Gober, Mike Kelley, Roy Lichtenstein, Sarah Lucas, Richard Prince, Aura Rosenberg, Laurie Simmons, John Waters, and many others.
