It’s better to be foreign and younger in today’s art world, which voraciously craves newer, fresher talent. And so, in an effort to revamp its museum system, Italy announced this week that its top 20 museums are getting new directors. Aside from the fact of such a significant staff turnover, the news came as a surprise because so many of the new directors are non-Italian in origin, younger than 50, or both. Perhaps most notable among the new staff is the Uffizi’s new director, the German art historian Eike Schmidt, who comes from the Minneapolis Institute of Art. Schmidt is one of five Americans who will now join the staff of Italy’s best museums, and, at age 47, he is one of 12 directors younger than 50. The staff is also becoming less male—half of the new directors are women. Above, a look at the Italy’s new museum directors.
