JASON WIERZBICKI/PHILADELPHIA MUSEUM OF ART/INSTALLATION VIEW: PHILADELPHIA MUSEUM OF ART
The Franz West Privatstiftung announced today it is currently prepping a catalogue raisonné for Franz West, the Austrian artist best known for sculptural works that he made with materials like plaster and papier-mâché.
Design-inspired sculptural work by West, who died at age 65 in 2012, could be seen last year at David Zwirner in New York. Currently, Gagosian Gallery is showing West’s “Möbelskulpturen,” or furniture works, in the city. (The Archiv Franz West recently disputed the authenticity of the works in the Gagosian show, calling them “unauthorized” versions, though, at this time of writing, a federal judge has ruled that they will remain on view.)
Because of the size and breadth of West’s oeuvre, the catalogue raisonné will be several volumes. The first volume will focus on West’s outdoor sculptures, which have appeared at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Lincoln Center, MASS MoCA, the Baltimore Museum of Art, and many other locations.
The Franz West Privatstiftung asks collectors, museums, and galleries to come forward if they own any works by West. A release notes that, if the owners want, they can be kept anonymous in the catalogue raisonné. The Franz West Privatstiftung’s contact information can be found on its website.
