For her first show since winning the Venice Biennale’s Golden Lion Award for her German Pavilion performance piece, Anne Imhof will have a two-person exhibition with Eliza Douglas at Galerie Buchholz in New York. The show opens on September 9 and runs through October 21.
Douglas and Imhof, both of whom are based in Frankfurt, Germany, are frequent collaborators. Imhof’s Venice Biennale piece, Faust, features Douglas, along with several others, performing a series of gestures and actions in an environment that includes a grid of metal girders, burning mini-torches, a tape of Imhof screaming, barking dogs, and more. Douglas, who is Imhof’s fiancée, has also worked with Imhof on performances staged at MoMA PS1, the Montreal Biennial, the Kunsthalle Basel, and elsewhere.
At Galerie Buchholz, Douglas and Imhof will show a series of paintings they made together. One untitled work in the show is an abstract canvas that features the two artist’s names scrawled on top of each other. Alongside these collaborative pieces will also be works made by the individual artists.
