Earlier today, reporters from the New York Times—along with reporters from CNN and Politico—were barred from a White House press briefing, so we thought there was no better time to bring you the news of the summer exhibition at the Flag Art Foundation in New York, tentatively called “The Times” and dedicated to artworks that use the Times as inspiration.
More importantly—for artists reading this—Flag is doing an open call (deadline: March 12) for artists to submit Times-inspired artworks for consideration for inclusion in the exhibition, which will run from June 1 through August 11.
Selected artworks will be in very good company indeed. Flag’s working artist list for the show includes Robert Gober, On Kawara, Fred Tomaselli, and Ellsworth Kelly.

OPEN CALL FOR ARTIST SUBMISSIONS FOR SUMMER EXHIBITION
The FLAG Art Foundation is accepting artist submissions for an upcoming summer group exhibition, which focuses on artists who negotiate politics, tragedies, social issues, and their own perspectives, by using The New York Times as an inspiration for their work. Due to the exhibition’s size constraints, a limited number of proposals will be accepted. Important dates and details for submissions below:
Important Dates:
- Applications will be accepted from February 22 – March 12, 2017.
- FLAG will inform all selected applicants by March 31, 2017.
- Works are to be delivered to FLAG the week of May 15, 2017.
- Work will be returned in coordination with each participating artist at the close of the exhibition inAugust, 2017.Proposal Parameters:
- Artists are to propose to make a new work or submit an existing work that uses The New York Times as its point of departure.
- Artists understand that their work is one component of a large group exhibition, which includes several historic works.
- While there are no specific stipulations related to scope/medium, spacial constraints will be a consideration in the decision to include a work.
- Eligibility may be limited by projects that require specialized installation/instructions.
- Video works will be shown on wall-mounted flat-screen televisions.
- The exhibition space in which the work will be shown is approximately 800 square feet, with 118-inch ceiling heights.Submission Guidelines:
- Proposals should be formatted as a PDF and emailed to info@flagartfoundation.org with ‘Open Call’ and the artist’s first and last name in the subject line.
- PDFs must include artist’s full contact information (address, phone number, and email).
- Artists should include a brief description of the existing or proposed work, along with any other relevant details, including bio, CV, supporting materials, etc., all formatted in one PDF document.
- Artists should format their proposal to include any or all images within the body of the PDF.
- Applications that do not follow the guidelines and/or which are hand-delivered or mailed will not be reviewed.
