Today the American Academy of Arts and Letters announced the names of the nine artists who will each receive a $10,000 prize at the Academy’s annual awards in a ceremony to be held in New York in May. The winners were chosen from a pool of 37 artists who participated in the Academy’s Invitational Exhibition of Visual Art, which runs through April 10.
The list of winners in their various categories follows below.
The Arts and Letters Awards in Art, which honors exceptional accomplishments and encourages creative work:

- Anthony McCall
- Nancy Mitchnick
- Joan Synder
- Lee Tribe
Jacob Lawrence and Gwendolyn Knight Lawrence Awards, given to visual artists:
- Carmen Cicero
- Patricia Patterson
William L. Metcalf Award, given to a young artist of great promise:
- Aleah Chapin
Rosenthal Family Foundation Award in Painting, given to a young American painter of distinction:
- Chuck Webster
