NEW YORK—Ann Freedman, former director and president of Knoedler & Company, told ARTnewsletter she plans to launch a new gallery on the Upper East Side of Manhattan next season, where she will work with artists including Lee Bontecou and Frank Stella, as well as the estate of color-field painter Jules Olitski.
Freedman said she is happy to be working with “seminal artists whose careers I have come to know over a long period of time and whose creativity I admire greatly. They have reached out to me and expressed their own interest in coming together with me.”
Asked about her approach to art dealing now that she is launching her own operation, Freedman said that she’d like to have “an exhibition program that includes collaboration with colleagues, such as thematic and contextual exhibitions,” including the possibility of noncommercial shows. She added she hopes her program will “advance awareness, appreciation and understanding of their careers.”
The first exhibition of FreedmanArt is a collaboration with HackettMill, San Francisco. “Jules Olitski: Embracing Circles, 1959–1964,” opens July 9 and runs through Oct. 1. Freedman said she’d also like to vary the exhibition program “beyond the artists that I’m directly representing.”
Freedman joined Knoedler in 1978 as director, and in 1994 was appointed president.
