Each year, the Brooklyn-based nonprofit Artadia awards a series of grants to artists in various cities, including Atlanta, San Francisco, Houston, and others. Today, we have news of the five finalists for its Los Angeles awards, which will eventually be whittled down to two winners after a judging process. The winners will receive $10,000, no strings attached.
This year’s finalists include Carmen Argote, Jibade-Khalil Huffman, Kahlil Joseph, Gelare Khoshgozaran, and Gala Porras-Kim.
The judging process for the Artadia Awards was headed up this year by three jurors: the artist Daniel Joseph Martinez, the Chicago-based curator Yesomi Umolu, and Anuradha Vikram, the artistic director of the 18th Street Arts Center in L.A.
The nonprofit fielded 500 applications for the prize from visual artists who have lived in Los Angeles County for at least two years. In the coming weeks, the jurors will conduct studio visits and evaluate the merits of each individual finalist.
