Today, the national visual arts nonprofit Artadia announced five finalists for its 2016 Atlanta Awards. This is Artadia’s fourth time presenting unrestricted awards to Atlanta artists. Out of the 188 applications received, the finalists are:
- Kelly Kristin Jones
- T. Lang
- Jiha Moon
- Zipporah Thompson
- Cosmo Whyte
Artadia supports artists through merit-based awards and ongoing programming efforts. “Finalists and Artadia Award recipients are selected through Artadia’s rigorous, two-tier jury review process,” which engages nationally recognized curators to review work and culminates in direct grants, according to a news release.
The 2016 Atlanta Artadia Awards were open to all visual artists living in Greater Atlanta for over two years, “working in any media and at any stage of their career.” The five Finalists were selected by Sofía Hernández Chong Cuy, curator of contemporary art at the Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros; Jamillah James, curator at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; and Katherine Jentleson, curator of folk and self-taught art at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta.
Hernández Chong Cuy said in a statement, “The selection process was difficult—simply because there were a great number of artists with strong work to consider, an indication, too, of a lively arts community in Atlanta.”
