Founded in 1902—as Hyde’s Weekly Art News—ARTnews today entered a new phase, in a merger with Brant Publications, the publisher of Art in America. Since I joined ARTnews a year ago, shortly after it was acquired by new owners from longtime editor and publisher Milton Esterow, and brought on talented new staff members, I have watched as the magazine’s web presence has grown exponentially; we’ve attracted new readers to this venerable title by publishing timely and engaging stories. On the publishing side, this formidable 15-month turnaround took place under the new owners of Artnews (Polish listed Artnews S.A.), led by our CEO Izabela Depczyk. Now, exciting opportunities exist that coincide in a timely manner with our digitally focused approach.
Over the years, ARTnews has consistently published compelling journalism, winning numerous journalism awards, including a National Magazine Award, and has boasted one of the widest circulations of any art magazine. I am happy to say that the magazine will continue in this tradition.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank my staff. I am proud of the work we have done over the past year, as we have transformed ARTnews, producing issues like our widely lauded June 2015 issue, co-edited with curator Maura Reilly and devoted to women in the arts. In the context of the merger with Brant Publications, I look forward to continuing to provide our readers with top-notch journalism, online and in print, presented in a lively and vivid fashion.
