COURTESY ARTPRIZE
Kevin Buist, formerly director of exhibitions at ArtPrize, the annual art competition held in Grand Rapids, Michigan, will be the organization’s new artistic director.
In his new role, Buist, who has been a member of the ArtPrize team since its launch in 2009, will oversee the development and implementation of exhibitions and special programs.
“Though I’ve been a part of the ArtPrize team since the beginning, I’m not a defender of tradition,” Buist said in a statement. “ArtPrize is an ever-evolving experiment, and the organization is consistently willing to challenge itself, adapt to change and alter course when necessary.”
As director of exhibitions, Buist manages over 1,400 projects shown in more than 170 locations each fall. He also led the planning of ArtPrize’s current award structure, which presents a total of $500,000 in cash prizes.
“As the event grows, ArtPrize is not bound by a rigid sense of how the exhibition should be structured,” Buist said. “We will continue to pursue new ideas and invest in artists who challenge us and expand our notion of what art can be.”
The tenth edition of ArtPrize will take place from September 19 to October 7.
