With over 400,000 visitors this year and $560,000 in cash prizes, ArtPrize is currently America’s biggest art award. Now, the Grand Rapids-based art competition aims to get bigger.
Today ArtPrize announced the first edition of ArtPrize Dallas, after signing a three-year contract with a Dallas-based nonprofit. Slated for April 2016, the first ArtPrize Dallas will award up to $500,000 in prizes—a $200,000 jury prize, a $200,000 people’s prize, and other smaller awards. The Dallas version of the contest is independent from its Grand Rapids counterpart, whose seventh edition is scheduled for September 2015.
Started in 2009 by businessman Rick DeVos, ArtPrize has become a major opportunity for artists across the country, with over 1,500 artists submitting to this year’s competition. Of those artists, Anila Quayyum Agha was chosen as the winner of the Public Vote Award and of half the Grand Jury Award (which she split with Sonya Clark) for her latticework installation Intersections.
