Less than two years after she left the Musée d’Orsay to become the chief curator of the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia, Sylvie Patry will return to the Paris museum, this time as deputy director for curatorial affairs and collections. Through 2019, she will be a consulting curator at the Barnes, where she will continue to help the museum build a catalogue raisonné for the Cézanne works in its collection.
Patry first joined the Musée d’Orsay in 2005 as curator, and left her post there in 2016. An expert in Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art, she has also held positions at the Institut National d’Histoire de l’Art, the Musée National Gustave-Moreau, and the Palais des Beaux-Arts de Lille.
The Barnes has appointed its associate curator, Cindy Kang, as its the interim leader of its curatorial department. Patry will also continue to oversee two exhibitions she was working on for the Barnes—a two-person show of Anselm Kiefer and Auguste Rodin and an exhibition of works by Mohamed Bourouissa, as well as upcoming shows about Berthe Morisot and Pierre-Auguste Renoir.
In a statement, Thom Collins, the Barnes’s executive director and president, said, “Sylvie has played an important role in building our dynamic special exhibition program, which brings living artists and new ideas into conversation with our permanent collection, and she has also expanded our relationship with leading arts institutions around the world.
