COURTESY THE ARTISTS
Released this week, the new video for “Dot Net” by the Warp Records band Battles was directed by the artist Ben Jones and is part of a new Warp film series centered around collaborations between visual artists and Warp artists.
The video–made for the British public-service broadcaster Channel 4’s ongoing series Random Acts–is mostly shot inside of Jones’ recent show at Los Angeles’s Ace Gallery. It does not include the band performing in any capacity, but it does combine their blippy, tricky post-rock with the kind of hyper-color cartoon-imbedded geometric art that Jones has been developing since his days in the collective Paper Rad.
What’s more, it features cameos from, among others, the comedians Eric Wareheim (of Tim & Eric) and Budd Diaz, Whitmer Thomas and Clay Tatum (the latter three of the emerging collective Powerviolence). It also features a bit of ping pong action, courtesy of the custom table that sits at the center of Jones’ Ace show.
