Barbara Weiss, whose Berlin gallery represented a formidable international roster of artists, died on December 31, according to a report in Monopol. She was 56 and had reportedly been ill.
After running a gallery with Michael Wewerka for a few years, Weiss opened her eponymous gallery in Berlin in 1992 with a solo show by Larry Clark, according to Artforum.com. Over the next quarter-century she would give numerous shows to artists such as John Miller, Monika Baer, Raoul De Keyser, and Ayşe Erkmen.
“Over the course of her career she committed deeply to the extraordinary work of her gallery artists,” Weiss’s stepson, the art dealer Leo Koenig, wrote in a message on Facebook. “Beyond her gallery, Barbara also advocated for women of all generations and in all positions in the arts. We are just one small part of a very large fan club that will miss her many contributions to our field.”
Weiss’s roster also included Thomas Bayrle, Nicole Eisenman, Mary Heilmann, Rebecca Morris, Mai-Thu Perret, Roman Signer, and Niele Toroni. A solo exhibition at the gallery by Rainer Ganahl runs through January 7.
