The Birmingham Museum of Art’s board of trustees announced today that, following a six-month search, Graham C. Boettcher has been appointed the museum’s new R. Hugh Daniel Director. The BMA’s current director, Gail C. Andrews, who has been with the museum for more than 40 years, 21 as director, will stay on at the museum for several weeks to help transition Boettcher into the position. His first day is September 20.
Boettcher joined the BMA in 2006 as an American art curatorial fellow. After two years as a fellow, Boettcher was made curator in that department, later rising to the ranks of chief curator and deputy director. In those positions Boettcher curated a number of shows including “A Masterpiece in Our Midst: Robert S. Duncanson’s A Dream of Italy” (2010), “Norman Rockwell’s America” (2012), and “The Look of Love: Eye Miniatures from the Skier Collection” (2012).
Boettcher has also held positions as a fellow at the Center for Curatorial Leadership, served as a trustee of the Association of Art Museum Curators since 2010, and delivered lectures on American art locally and abroad.
In a press statement, the museum’s chairman, James K. Outland, characterized Boettcher as “a distinguished scholar of art history, a dedicated steward of our collection, and a highly-regarded community leader who is committed to realizing the mission and vision of our prized institution.”
