Bloomberg Philanthropies announced today that 262 arts organizations will receive grants from its Arts Innovation and Management (AIM) program, which is devoted to awarding money to small and midsize nonprofits in Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Detroit, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. Among the awardees are Boston’s Museum of African American History, Chicago’s Hyde Park Arts Center, Dallas Contemporary, the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit, Los Angeles’s Women in Film, and San Francisco’s Queer Cultural Center. Combined, Bloomberg Philanthropies is giving $30 million.
The program, which was announced earlier this year, in April, asked grantees, all of which are two or more years old, to take part in one workshop funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies in cooperation with the DeVos Institute of Arts Management at the University of Maryland. The grantees will also participate in a second workshop in October, where they will learn strategies for community outreach using the arts.
According to the conditions of the grants, the 262 recipients will now be asked to find matching funds, get 100 percent board support of fundraising, and get involved in the Cultural Data Project, which allows organizations to collect data and use it more efficiently to manage resources.
“Arts organizations bring life and creativity to communities and strengthen local economies,” Michael R. Bloomberg, the founder of Bloomberg Philanthropies, said of the program, which was first piloted in New York between 2011 and 2013. “This program can help them expand their audiences and have an even greater public impact.”
