Charmaine Jefferson, director of Los Angeles’ California African American Museum, will depart her post by the end of the day today, the Los Angeles Times reports.
“From my heart I thank you for having allowed me this great leadership opportunity,” she wrote in a message on the museum’s website.
Jefferson spent more than a decade at the head of the institution and leaves ahead of a major renovation that will triple the 44,000-square-foot museum (estimated to cost $67.3 million in 2011).
The museum’s board president, Todd Hawkins, said that plan will likely be scaled back “to some degree,” though Jefferson’s successor will still have a big job ahead of her. The board will soon appoint an interim director before conducting a national search for Jefferson’s replacement.
