British performance artist Cally Spooner has won the Artissima art fair’s Illy Present Future Prize. The prize recognizes one emerging artist whose work is on view at the fair, which is currently taking place in Turin, Italy.
Spooner’s work was brought to the fair by the Parisian gallery GB Agency. She is known for her performances and videos that meditate on the relationship between people’s bodies and larger power structures.
Spooner was selected by a jury made up of SculptureCenter executive director and curator Mary Ceruti, Castello di Rivoli Museo d’Arte Contemporanea and GAM Torino director Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev, and Steirischer Herbst festival curator Luigi Fassi. Previous winners have included Rachel Rose, Cécile B. Evans, and Alina Chaiderov.
In a statement, the jury said, “Cally Spooner’s performative and mixed media work explores the choreography of invisible violence in the digital age. Through her art, we understand how subjectivity and its bodies change as they are shaped by the technological condition.”
