The news first appeared on the Twitter account of art journalist Charlotte Burns earlier this afternoon. Vogel’s Inside Art column that appeared every Thursday was widely read among the art world, and broke quite a lot of news over the years, though her reputation was marred last summer by allegations that she had lifted a paragraph from Wikipedia for an article about the painter Piero di Cosimo. The article was appended with an editor’s note and, after an internal investigation, The Times deemed this a one-off incident, though others, including Erik Wemple of The Washington Post, were skeptical of that conclusion. A Times spokeswoman said in an e-mail that Vogel “has made the decision to accept a voluntary buyout that was offered in our newsroom.” A call placed to Vogel’s desk number at The New York Times went to voicemail.
