The Andy Warhol Foundation announced today that photographer Catherine Opie has been elected to its board, which also includes Deborah Kass, Carrie Mae Weems, and Adam Weinberg.
The news comes as Opie, who is also on the board of MOCA Los Angeles, readies for not one, but five solo shows, three of which will be happening in Los Angeles. In January, Opie’s portraits and landscapes, which often subvert their respective genre’s conventions and sometimes involve LGBTQ culture, will be on view in Los Angeles at the MOCA Pacific Design Center and the Hammer Museum in L.A., and in New York at both Lehmann Maupin spaces. (The MOCA and one of the Lehmann Maupin shows are connected—both are titled “700 Nimes Road.”) Then, in February, LACMA will show Opie’s O Portfolio, which features scenes of sadomasochism and has never been shown before in Los Angeles.
In a statement, Joel Wachs, the president of the Warhol Foundation’s board, said, “Cathy Opie’s distinguished work as an artist, educator and arts leader will greatly assist the Foundation in imaginatively carrying out Andy Warhol’ s wish to nurture and support the visual arts.”
