Later this month, Cynthia Nixon, the Sex and the City star who’s a candidate in the forthcoming Democratic gubernatorial primary in New York—and who’s known for riding the subway and slamming the MTA, the authority that oversees it—just may get off at the West 23rd Street station and, like many an art fan, walk two blocks west, to Cheim & Read gallery, which will host a fundraiser for her on the evening of August 14.
An email announcing the event, which was sent by the gallery on Monday, lists the reception’s hosts as John Cheim and Howard Read, the gallery’s founders; Mary Gail Doerhoefer, who’s a partner and administrative director there; and Ellen Robinson, its director of press relations. (A note at the bottom explains that Cynthia for New York, the candidate’s campaign, paid for the event.) Tickets are going for between $100 and $1,000.
“We believe in Cynthia Nixon’s platform and would like to lend our support at this critical time in American politics,” the gallery told ARTnews in an email.
Cheim & Read, which revealed earlier this summer that it plans to close its Chelsea space and move uptown in January, is not the only neighborhood enterprise to host an event for a Democratic politician recently. A couple months before the 2016 U.S. Presidential election, Gagosian hosted a fundraising auction for Hillary Clinton, at which works by such artists as Jeff Koons, Joyce Pensato, and Barbara Kruger were put up for sale.
