The Studio Museum in Harlem has hired Connie H. Choi as associate curator of its permanent collection, filling a role left vacant when Lauren Haynes departed to become curator of contemporary art at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas, late last year.
Choi comes to the Studio Museum from the Brooklyn Museum, where she was assistant curator of American art and was involved in the reinstallation of its American art galleries. She holds an Ed.M. in arts in education from Harvard and is a doctoral candidate in art history at Columbia, focusing on African-American art.
At the Studio Museum, Choi will be working with a permanent collection numbering 2,200 objects, more of which will be regularly on display in the future, as a result of a proposed $122 million David Adjaye–designed expansion that will include additional gallery space. The museum has said the expansion will be completed in 2019.
Selections from the permanent collection can now be seen in an exhibition at the museum called “Circa 1970,” which features works from its holdings made during the 1970s, including pieces by Benny Andrews, Barbara Chase-Riboud, Ed Clark, Beauford Delaney, and Betye Saar.
