The Jewish Museum in New York has appointed Darsie Alexander as it chief curator. The position was previously held by Norman L. Kleeblatt, who announced in December that he was leaving the museum after having worked there for 40 years. Alexander will begin her tenure at the Jewish Museum in mid-March.
Alexander has been the executive director of the Katonah Museum of Art in Katonah, New York, since 2014. Prior to that, she had been chief curator at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, senior curator at the Baltimore Museum of Art, and a photography curator at the Museum of Modern Art.
Among the shows she has curated are the Walker’s critically acclaimed survey “International Pop” and the first U.S. retrospective of the sculptor Franz West, which opened at the Baltimore Museum of Art in 2008.
Claudia Gould, the Jewish Museum’s director, said in a statement, “Darsie has the leadership qualities and range of experience that we were looking for in a chief curator. I am confident that she will work with our curatorial team to create dynamic exhibitions that reflect the diversity of Jewish culture and identity.”
