Chelsea art dealer Denis Gardarin announced today that he is working with artist Joseph La Piana on two new projects, both of which will open on September 25 in Brooklyn’s Red Hook neighborhood. The first, located inside La Piana’s 4,000-square-foot studio there, will be a survey of the artist’s work, curated by Gardarin. The second will present a large-scale installation by the artist, Tension, in a renovated shipbuilding warehouse at 202 Coffey Street.
The survey show will include works from throughout La Piana’s career in a variety of mediums, including wire sculptures, works on paper, cardboard sculptures, and marble paintings.
Gardarin, a former director at White Cube and Sean Kelly, is the latest in a handful of art types to organize shows in Red Hook recently. Artist Dustin Yellin’s multidisciplinary Pioneer Works space has become a popular destination since it opened in 2012, and Lower East Side outfit Brennan & Griffin opened a warehouse in the area earlier this year. Last year, Jeffrey Deitch was also said to be scouting a location in Red Hook, though he has not yet announced plans for a permanent space.
Tension will be on view through September 28. The survey show, “Contiguous: 30 Works,” runs through October 8.
