What does one do after curating a world-class biennial? Many high-flying curators choose to keep a low profile, perhaps lining up a cozy little academic job or a plum museum gig, taking it easy. But not so for DIS, the New York–based collective. The New Museum announced today that DIS, which organized this year’s Berlin Bienniale, will now be an artist in residence at New Inc, the institution’s incubator, for the coming year. As an artist in residence, DIS—which is composed of Lauren Boyle, Solomon Chase, Marco Roso, and David Torowill—will work on new projects while also organizing programs at the New Museum.
Their Berlin Biennale, like much of DIS’s practice, is geared around the internet, its connection to advertising and politics, and its effect on the meaning of images in today’s world. But it would be hard to say that DIS is only an art collective—its members have also experimented with fashion and editorial ventures, made available online in the form of DIS Magazine.
More recently, DIS has moved from making work that only exists online to producing physical objects. One, a shower-cum-kitchen-cum-workspace accompanied by a video, was on view at the New Museum Triennial last year, and the collective also produced the scenography for an exhibition called “Co-Workers” at the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris.
