El Museo del Barrio in New York announced today the addition of six new members to its board of trustees. They are Juan Domingo Beckmann, Moisés Cosio, Veronica G. Powell, Clarice Oliveira Tavares, Renata Paula, and Monica Vidal. They are the first major appointments made since the museum’s new director, Patrick Charpenel, began work last month.
Beckmann, who is Mexican, is the CEO of Jose Cuervo. Cosio is a Mexican film producer who founded Detalle Films, which has produced movies by Atom Egoyan and Alejandro Jodorowsky, as well as a collector and the founder of a Mexican contemporary arts organization, Alumnos 47. Powell is a cofounder of the Zona Maco art fair.
Oliveira Tavares is New York–based collector who was born in Brazil and worked in various positions at Argentina’s Museo De Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires. Paula is a Brazilian philanthropist and art collector and the founder and CEO of the nonprofit Instituto Ybi, which provides ballet lessons to children. Vidal, who was born in Madrid and lives in New York, is the managing partner of the investment A+Capital.
“With their valuable input, care, and diverse perspectives, we are confident that El Museo will continue to grow in its exhibitions, programming, and influence in the Latin American and global arts communities,” Charpenel said in a statement.
The new board members all hail from Latin American countries, with the exception of Powell, who has dual Mexican and American citizenship.
