The board of the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami announced that Ellen Salpeter has been named director of the museum, effective December 1. Salpeter currently holds the position of deputy director of external affairs at the Jewish Museum in New York.
In a statement, Irma Braman, co-chair of ICA Miami’s board of trustees, said, “Throughout her career, Ellen has been dedicated to forging alliances among cultural, civic, and educational institutions for community benefit, and to creating spaces in which meaningful public dialogue on contemporary art can occur. Her vision and leadership will be invaluable as we enter into this next critical chapter of our museum’s history.”
As director, Salpeter will work primarily with ICA Miami’s chief curator, Alex Gartenfeld, to guide the museum into its next chapter of institutional development and into what will be its new, 37,500-square-foot space in the center of Miami’s Design District.
Before joining the Jewish Musuem, Salpeter had worked as founding director of cultural nonprofit Heart of Brooklyn and also served as executive director of multidisciplinary arts center Thread Waxing Space.
