Pictures at an Exhibition presents images of one notable show every weekday.
Today’s show: “Eugene Savage: The Matson Murals” is currently on view at The Honolulu Museum of Art and features a selection of the murals that Eugene Savage was commissioned in 1938 to make for the Matson Navigation company. The works, completed in 1940, were originally supposed to be installed in the company’s ships. However, with the advent of World War II, Matson’s liners were transformed into troopships and the murals were placed in storage. The murals were not publicly seen until last year, in the Honolulu Museum of Art’s exhibition “Art Deco Hawa’i.” The current show of Savage’s murals is on view until August 16, 2015.
