COURTESY THE ARTIST
Film London, the film and media agency for the city of London, has announced the shortlist for the 2016 Jarman Award, naming Rachel Maclean, Sophia Al Maria, Heather Phillipson, Mikhail Karikis, Cécile B. Evans, and Shona Illingworth as finalists for the £10,000 (roughly $14,600) prize. The Jarman Award is given annually to a U.K.-based artist who works with film, and honors the memory of the celebrated filmmaker Derek Jarman.
The award, given in conjunction with the Whitechapel Gallery and Britain’s Channel 4, provides the opportunity to all those on the shortlist to produce a film for Random Acts, a short film series commissioned by Channel 4. The shortlisted artists will also participate in a month-and-a-half long tour across Britain, culminating in the announcement of the winner at Whitechapel on November 28.
The jury for the award includes a Tate Modern board member, fellow filmmakers, and the director of the Whitechapel Gallery.
