Frieze announced today that it has tapped Raphael Gygax to be the new curator of Frieze Projects. Gygax, who is curator at the Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst in Zurich, will choose artists to create new works for the 2016 Frieze Projects, which will appear at the London fair in October. Frieze Projects, founded in 2003 as a nonprofit commissions program, is backed by the LUMA Foundation, as is its Frieze Artist Award.
Director of the Frieze Fairs, Victoria Siddall, said in a statement,
“The Frieze Projects programme of artist commissions has been a cornerstone of the fair since its inception in 2003. I am thrilled to welcome Raphael Gygax as the new curator of the projects for Frieze London. His diverse interests in performance, film and theatre, and his wide-ranging curatorial experience, will continue a rich tradition—begun by Polly Staple and most recently led by Nicola Lees—of commissioning exciting, ambitious, site-specific works which challenge disciplinary boundaries and contribute to the entirely unique experience of the Frieze fairs.”
At the Migros Museum Gygax has organized solo shows by artists including Xanti Schawinsky, Wu Tsang, Carey Young, Stephen G. Rhodes, Alex Bag, Spartacus Chetwyn, and Cory Arcangel. Gygax also advises the Frame, Focus, and Live programs for both Frieze New York and Frieze London.
