It is still early on International Women’s Day here in New York, but so far it’s looking like at least a handful of galleries are closing to mark the Day Without a Woman strike. In New York, Chelsea standbys Metro Pictures and Koenig & Clinton have shuttered to mark the occasion, as has A.I.R. Gallery in Brooklyn, and over in Sacramento, California, the Verge Center for the Arts is also closed.
The strike, which grew out of the Women’s March on January 21, asks women to wear red, not to engage in work, and to avoid spending money. Protests are scheduled throughout the world today. One is set to take place at Washington Square Park in Manhattan at 4 p.m.
