Brian Sholis is the new executive director of Gallery TPW, the nonprofit space started in 1980 by the Toronto Photographers Workshop. Sholis takes the place of Gary Hall, who founded the gallery and served as its director until announcing his retirement last year.
Sholis was previously curator of photography at the Cincinnati Art Museum, where he organized “Kentucky Renaissance: The Lexington Camera Club and Its Community, 1954–1974” and “Field Guide: Photographs by Jochen Lempert,” among other exhibitions. Before that, he was an editor for the Aperture Foundation and Artforum.
“Gallery TPW has a distinguished history and an ambitious interdisciplinary program,” Sholis said in a statement released to press. “I am delighted to join the city’s vibrant arts community and contribute to it by building upon Gary Hall’s legacy.
Recent shows at Gallery TPW, which moved to a 3,300-square-foot location in Toronto’s Junction Triangle neighborhood two years ago, have included solo outings by Sharon Lockhart, David Levine, and Tris Vonna-Michell. Through June 10, the space is hosting a one-person exhibition by Luis Jacob.
Those who will be in Sweden in the coming months, take note: a show that Sholis co-curated with Lucas Blalock, Ida Kierulf, Susanne Ø. Sæther, and Nina Strand, titled “Subjektiv,” runs at the Malmö Konsthall from June 3 through September 10, and includes work by Sara Cwynar, Liz Magic Laser, Deana Lawson, Zoe Leonard, and other superb artists.
