The 2018 New Museum triennial will be organized by Gary Carrion-Murayari, who is a curator at the museum, and Alex Gartenfeld, the deputy director and chief curator of the Institute for Contemporary Art in Miami, the New York Times reported today.
Carrion-Murayari’s curatorial credits include the strong 2010 Whitney Biennial (with Francesco Bonami—interestingly, Gartenfeld reviewed it while an editor at Art in America) and, at the New Museum, solo shows by Haroon Mirza (with Jenny Moore), Ellen Gallagher, Camille Henrot, Paweł Althamer, and Albert Oehlen (the last three with Massimiliano Gioni).
Gartenfeld’s first major art venture was the West Street Gallery, an apartment space on Manhattan’s West Side Highway that he ran with Matt Moravec (now the proprietor of the Off Vendome gallery in Chelsea), which gave early shows to Sam Falls, Van Hanos, and Andrea Longacre-White. Gartenfeld joined the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami in 2013 as a curator, where he worked with artists like Ian Cheng, Lena Henke, and Anicka Yi. Last year, he left MOCA North Miami with its board to help found the ICA Miami, which is at work on a 40,000-square-foot home in the city’s Design District.
Naturally it is too soon for the curators to have fully fleshed out plans of the show. We’ll wait and see!
