Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA, the behemoth exhibition series that brought much of the international art world’s attention to Latin American and Latinx art this past fall, will close its run this Sunday, January 28. Over its four-month run, more than 70 exhibitions, a week-long performance festival, and countless hours of related programming were staged. The fun isn’t over quite yet, though. The Getty Foundation, which organized and funded the initiative, awarding more than $16 million to the project in grants, has released a lengthy list of the destinations to which some of the exhibitions will travel, both nationally and internationally, over the next several years.
“Although Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA will officially close at the end of January, in many ways this is just the beginning,” Getty Trust president James Cuno said in a statement. “Over the last four months, our many partners reexamined and realigned narratives of art history through their exhibitions and events, bringing together the many connections between Latin American and Latino art without regard to borders or categories. Their discoveries will live on in the many exhibitions that will travel far beyond Los Angeles.”
Among those slated to travel is Laura Aguilar’s groundbreaking career retrospective, one of the most critically acclaimed exhibitions in PST: LA/LA; it will now head to the Frost Art Museum in Miami. “Axis Mundo,” a group exhibition that charted the long-understudied constellations of relationships between queer Chicanx artists in Los Angeles and beyond, will travel to at least three venues through a partnership with the Independent Curators International.
New York will get at least five of the initiative’s exhibitions: “Golden Kingdoms” and “Painted in Mexico, 1700–1790” will come to the Metropolitan Museum of Art; the hotly anticipated “Radical Women” will go to the Brooklyn Museum; “Relational Undercurrents: Contemporary Art of the Caribbean Archipelago” will make its way to the Wallach Art Gallery at Columbia University; and a two-person exhibition by Suzanne Lacy and Pablo Helguera will open at the 8th Floor next month.
