Guggenheim Museum’s Middle East Exhibition Goes to Milan, Marking the End of MAP Initiative Shows

After a showing in New York in 2016, the Guggenheim Museum’s survey exhibition “But a Storm Is Blowing from Paradise: Contemporary Art of the Middle East and North Africa” will take up residence in Milan in spring 2018. Conceived as part of the Guggenheim UBS MAP Global Art Initiative, the show—which features works by 13 artists—will be on view at the Galleria d’Arte Moderna Milano from April into June of next year.

The show marks the end of the Guggenheim’s MAP series of exhibitions, which since 2013 has also included other regional surveys of art from Latin America as well as South and Southeast Asia. The program has comprised eight international exhibitions and more than 125 acquisitions, as well as curatorial research into each of the three regions featured.

In a statement, Richard Armstrong, the Guggenheim’s director, said, “As this Milan presentation represents the culmination of the MAP series of exhibitions, we also celebrate the artworks collected, relationships fostered, and ideas articulated during the project’s five years that continue to ripple outward thanks to MAP’s unprecedented scope, scale, and ambition.”
